Taylor High School

Larry Herges is currently in his 11th year as the athletic director for Taylor High School.  He enters his 21st  year as a high school athletic director.  He also served 6 years at Alexander High School and 4 years at Amanda-Clearcreek High School.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Mount Vernon Nazarene University (91) in Communications with a minor in History and his Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Ohio University (09).

​

 Larry began his career as a sports broadcaster in Nelsonville, Ohio, serving as Sports Director for WSEO/WAIS Radio for four years and Sports Director for WXTQ/WATH for seven years broadcasting high school sporting events. He broadcasted play-by-play for over 1000 games, earning the 2000-2001 OHSAA Media Service Award for the Southeast District.  He served eight years as a Juvenile Probation Officer for Athens County Juvenile Court, one year as Director of Communications for Athens County Children Services and one year as Director of Victim Assistance for Athens County Prosecutor C. David Warren before taking over at Alexander.

Larry has served as Treasurer of the SEOIAAA and as a tournament manager for Baseball, Softball, Boys and Girls Basketball, Volleyball, Lacrosse and Boys and Girls Soccer for the OHSAA in the SEDAB, CDAB and SWDAB districts.  Larry also earned the SEOIAAA Horizon Award in 2004 for outstanding new Athletic Director.

Larry has extensive involvement/supervision of building projects, including gym renovation and building of new baseball and softball fields at Alexander High School and the entire outdoor athletic complex at Three Rivers Local School District (Taylor High School).

In 2013 he spearheaded a grant proposal to the NFL Grassroots Campaign earning $200,000 from the NFL and Cincinnati Bengals for a new field turf.  Larry was able to secure a deal with UBU and the New Orleans Saints using the NFL Grant to purchase the actual turf from the Louisiana Super Dome. After the 2014 Sugar Bowl, the turf was delivered to Cleves, Ohio and installed by UBU.

Larry also partnered with LaRosa’s for $100,000 to build the schools new softball complex.  Through his efforts he has also partnered with UC Health/NovaCare, Neyer Plumbing, Baker Insurance and Coca-Cola to provide additional funding for scoreboards, a new soccer only grass stadium and an 8 lane track for the district.

Larry also enjoys writing having two published articles in High School Today.  A magazine published by the NFHS for athletic administrators and principals.  

Larry was recently elected as the Secretary of the South West Ohio District Athletic Directors Association (SWOADA).  He will serve two years as Secretary, two years as President Elect, two years as President and two years as Past President.  "It is a honor to be elected by my peers.  I look forward to representing the Southwest District," Herges said.

Larry is an avid Cincinnati Reds fan attending several games a year.  He loves the Ohio State Buckeyes and collects bobble heads and baseball cards.

Larry resides in the Three Rivers Local School District with his wife Kelly of 24 years (Educator for the past 32 years, currently with Hamilton County Educational Service Center) and has two children.   Alex (Taylor class of 2016, graduate of Ohio University 2020) and Nolan (Taylor Class of 2018, senior at University of Cincinnati, assistant football and track coach at Taylor). 

He states he has the best job in the entire world. He gets up in the morning and walks into Taylor High School to work with students all day long.  There is no other job like this.
